Plays everything the others won't!
I got this media player elsewhere locally, before Amazon dropped their price. Anyway, the GUI is fine. It's easily navigable, not cluttered at all, presented in a beautiful package, and certainly easy to read. All pluses there. The first videos I attempted to play were 720p mkv files over wireless network (on a 1TB HDD connected to my computer in the basement via USB). After taking a few seconds to gather the first few pictures from the USB--> wireless connected storage device, the WDTV Live streamed the videos seamlessly! I even paused one for like 8 minutes while making dinner, and it resumed with no noticeable glitches, artifacts, or rendering/buffering. The second (and only other) file type I attempted to play was a 1080p TS file I had recorded from my cable box. This took a little bit longer between hitting play and seeing video on the screen, but time was minimal. I want to say no more than 4 or 5 seconds. Again, it had to pull the video from the HDD to the computer via USB, and...

Best choice for the $100 range of devices
I want to start by letting you all know that I'm very picky about my electronics and I'm not easily satisfied nowadays, so I always play with several products before sticking with one. I've gone through the wdtv live plus (grey model with small remote), sony smp-n100, and the apple tv 2 before trying out this device (also used various BD players, gaming consoles for netflix/youtube streaming). I must say that this unit takes the cake in terms of what you get for the price.Too lazy to give you my full story and thoughts so I'm just going to sum it up and give comparisons to the atv2, which I'd consider the next best choice for a set top box.-Video quality exceeded my expectations (netflix, youtube, network streaming)-Youtube steams HD (unlike smp-n100 and other revisions of the wdtv live/plus)-Wifi is integrated in this unit but won't see my N network (no big deal)-Youtube won't allow you to access your subscriptions from the app, only your...

Excellent Network File Streaming Device!
I recently decided to start a little weekend project of completely digitizing my 200+ home DVD collection. I wont get into any arguments over the legal ramifications of this type of project, but rest assured every digital movie in my collection is a straight rip of a physical DVD I own. That being said, I really needed a good option to actually "deliver" these movies to my HD TV in my living room. I have an Xbox 360 but that just didnt seem to be making the cut. So I started researching these fancy smart set-top boxes. At first I was convinced the Roku XS 2 was the way to go - but I started reading more and more about its lack of specific filetype support (i.e. MKV, M4V, AVI to name a few). That and it really didnt do network streaming/sharing well (if at all). I saw the WD TV Live HUB with 1TB harddrive for 199 and thought that was just a little too steep for my price range (the Roku is 99 afterall). Then I somehow accidentally found this device on Amazon. The price...

A Real Review from a Real Owner
I just got the WD TV Live Plus and I have to say that I've finally found the perfect media streamer (for now).I've had the WD TV Live (not plus version) for about 5 months and it's served me well, streaming up just about every type of movie file that I've ever encountered. When I purchased the non-plus version, the only two features that I really wanted that it was missing was NetFlix support and full DVD menu support.Yes, I am a bummered that my existing non-plus version can't support NetFlix, but I very well knew that what I purchased it.Please Note: Most of the non-plus version marketing material says that it doesn't support full DVD menu navigation, but WD just came out with a firmware update that DOES add DVD menu support - Kuddos to WD for listening to their customers and giving them what they want.Regarding the NetFlix support, the PLUS version has a different chip inside of it that is required for NetFlix support (something about...

Now I'm Happy with WD Live Plus
I purchased the WD Live Plus HD Media Player to watch movies from my Windows Home server. I got tired of all the DVD's and no where to store them so I built a WHS from an old computer and ordered the WD Live plus. I ran a CAT5 cable to my LCD, hooked up the WD Live Plus and it automatically connected to my WHS. I was up and running in as little as 5 minutes streaming a video on the big screen. The 1st movie played flawlessly until I started to watch the 2nd movie. Towards the middle of the movie, WD Live started to freeze up. At first I thought it was my server so I rebooted the WHS and was back up and running again. Started to watch the movie and froze again. Now I'm getting very upset. Now I powered off/on the WD Live Plus and same issue. Some movies played with no issues and some movies just locked up. Now I'm getting upset with this media Player. I checked WD's website and could not find any solution to the device freezing so I ordered the "Asus O! Player" unit to...

... master of most
As in Jack of All Trades :)I want to begin by saying the 'I like' (but I don't yet fully 'love') WD's TV Live Hub and this earns it 4 (but not 5) stars. And I like it in spite of it lacking a few almost 'must have' features for a device in its class such as some storage redundancy (RAID-1 = disk mirroring) or at least a built-in backup utility or any significant security or, to a lesser extent (I'll explain) built-in Wi-Fi. And I like it even though bugs still exist such as the Hub's occasional failure to maintain/update its 'media library'. And I do like it even though the Hub's supported Web 'services' are few at this time - because some of the 'major' ones are there.___________________________Note: (9/9/2011 update):I am upgrading this to 5-stars because since the original writing of my review most of the bugs have been addressed and many important Web services and other features such as 'games' were added.Because of its...

Great product just read the online manual!
This is a fantastic product.Only two simple things need to be done after you have plugged everything in.Read the manual provided online. It is very informative and explains everything in detail.Download WD Discovery. Link for it is provided in the online manual. You can then map the hub as a hard drive and it'll function just like any other hard drive you might have used.Just drag any content you want into it and you are done.My dad who isn't technologically savvy has started using it as well which tells you a lot.It really is that simple to use.

good but be mindful of which router you use.
I bought this and am very happy with the "playing movies" off the internal harddrive part of it. The interface is good and pretty easy to get around. The whole box is amazingly small and quiet. The only issue I've had the last couple days is getting it to see the internet and my computer through the router...and I'm running a cable to the router-I'm not wireless.I could plug the WD straight into my modem and get netflix fine but when it went through my brand new netgear wpn824N-100NAS router, I couldnt get on or network with my computer. I've tried everything, read every troubleshooting forum on the web...but no joy. The router works for my computer...I get the internet on it just fine, but not on the Live Hub.Called WD today. after an hour of resetting router, resetting Live Hub, going through networking on my computer--all of which I'd tried already, he finally asked me what router I used. Then said it wasnt compatible with the Live Hub. I'm sort of questioning...

Does it come in black?
After much anticipation, WDTV Live is finally here! I'll get right to the point, because I know there are a lot of questions from current owners and those sitting on the fence about the capabilities of the Live in comparison to other media players on the market. I also considered the ($99) while waiting for the Live's release or the ($135). The WDTV is a proven quantity and for the Live, I had high expectations.Cosmetically, not much has changed. Not even the...

Excellent, easy to set up, really nice unit
There are already some very well-written informative reviews on this player, so I'll try to focus on the "out of the box experience" since mine is literally just out of the box today. Because my order on Amazon for this product was backordered for a month or more, I called all the local Best Buys until I found a WD TV Live that was not showing up on their "store availability" page and purchased it for $119 plus tax (oh how I missed Amazon when the tax was added on at my local store!). The price on Amazon has gone all over the place the last few days, from $119 to $149. I'm assuming we'll see it at $99 after the initial release period is over since several media players are now priced at that point.I went home, unpacked the box and in my haste I didn't even see the installation CD that came with the unit. (I just ran it now so I could tell you about it - it includes a utility which allows your computer to "see" the WD TV, as well as the manual and some other...

Powerful, but best from a wired connection
I bought this player to stream 720p and 1080p MKV files over my network from WHS SMB shares to an HD television. I did not try Youtube or the other internet features. The unit had some trouble properly detecting my displays, even with the most recent firmware. I first tried it with a Dell 2408 WFP 1900x1200 display using a DVI to HDMI cable. The player defaulted to a low and pixelated resolution, and I was unable to force it to use anything higher. I then tried component inputs, with success setting to 1080i. While very good, there was still apparent text aliasing, and the analog nature of the input locked out a number of advanced display options. It's possible an HDMI/HDMI cable would have fared better, but I didn't have one to test at this location. The second display was a Sony E50A10 720p projection television from 2006. No picture was visible when I connected the WDTV with an HDMI/HDMI cable. Neither composite nor component worked properly either, showing a...

Smart little puck, as good as (but different from) Apple TV
This little player, about the size of a hockey puck, is exactly what I was looking for. It's cheap, easy, and fun. I got it to play Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Vimeo, and everything else it does is a pleasant add-on, especially motion-controlled Angry Birds. If you're in the market for a Roku 2, I think you might as well get this high-end model (there are stripped-down versions for less money) since it has a few more capabilities, including a game controller, an ethernet jack, and a USB port for playing external files. The software interface is not slick but everything fast and responsive.UPDATE: I added a star because this unit has proven itself much more stable than it was at launch, due to frequent software updates. Also, the machine now has the HBO Go app, which allows you to stream from HBO on demand from a huge catalog of movies and TV shows. How is the Roku 2 different from the Apple TV (which it resembles, and I also considered)? It's physically similar...

The best streamer on the market!
First I have to say the negative reviews are puzzling to me, because I dont think those buyers understand what they are buying. As you know there is 3 versions, I absolutely recommend you spend the money on the XS (99.95) model, the main reason is because it's the only model with a USB port. Which in short term will allow you connect USB HD and play any movies you may of ripped from your DVD's. I have a 4TB array connected with most of my DVD collection, which is close to 1000 movies.Roku has three type of channels:PublicAppsPrivateThe public channels are the once visible in what is called "Channel Store". Currently there about 300, but channels are added weekly. Looking at fan blogs, there has yet to be a weeks in about 4 months, that at least several channels weren't added. Now channels can fall into three categories, Pay, Free, and Subscription.Pay means you pay onetime fee and you get access to the...

Great device, user experience could be better
I've been using Roku 2 XS for a few days now and I must say I like the device, but there are quite a few hiccups. So first the good stuff.* The Box is tiny and the setup is a breeze. I was up and streaming in under 5 mins.* Netflix, Huluplus, Amazon and Pandora worked fine* Streaming in 1080p worked fine without buffering (I use Xfinity) and the quality is superb* The Ethernet option (available only in XS) is very helpful and the Quality of streaming is far better than wirelessand the not so good stuff:* The Box does not have adequate memory and needs an external micro-SD card for more capacity* The device re-booted a few times for me when switching between channels. I was initially very upset with this as the reboot process takes about 3-4 mins. I called support and they asked me to uninstall Angry Birds as it takes up huge amount of space. Did that and then on no re-boots. This sucks as Roku 2 advertises Angry Birds big time and...

Comparing AppleTV to Roku2 XS
I own both the new Apple TV (1080P/2012) model and the Roku2 XS. I found myself doing a side by side comparison of the two products and here are my findings.AppleTVPros: Works out of the box, minimum effort to setup, really easy to use interface + wifi. Can Restream old purchased episodes. Netflix App much cleaner and more superb. Streaming and buffering causes no delays or degradation of picture. AirPlay makes up for a lot of the limited channels (with Mountain Lion the functionality goes up even more). iPad Remote easy to useCons: Limited Channels...needs an open API like Roku to build more channelsRoku2 XSPros: Many Channels available, Cheaper ($10), Free Movie Channels like Crackle, AmazonPrime availability, Vendor neutral. iPad Remote easy to useCons: Missing iTunes integration, Poor quality and buffering (constant downgrading the image quality on NBA League Pass and Netflix). User UI is just bland and could be cleaner. Bugs and...

Great at what it does but perhaps too limited
This is an elegant and easy to use little box. The interface is pretty, setup is dead simple (took less than 10 minutes from start to finish), and it's fairly intuitive to use. The problem comes in that it doesn't serve a great deal of function, at least for me.Apple TV is essentially 3 main functions in one package. iTunes front end, content/channel provider, and wireless display. On the face of it, Apple TV is a front end for iTunes and allows you to buy or rent content and view it on the box along with previously purchased content. The usefulness of this is based on where you buy content. If it's not iTunes then you can ignore most of it. All the magic from this perspective is essentially gone for videos and even music doesn't work without iTunes Match. You can alternatively access your media from another computer currently running iTunes, but only the content in iTunes (not a huge issue) and again, only when the computer is on and running (think of it...
